Reports suggest a flaw in his Jeep Grand Cherokee could be responsible.
Further details surrounding the untimely and horrific death of 'Star Trek' actor Anton Yelchin have arisen this week, with reports suggesting that his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a serious design flaw and was subject to a recall along with 1.1 million other Fiat Chrysler vehicles around the world.
Anton Yelchin owned a Jeep that had previously been complained about
If reports are to be believed, Anton Yelchin is not the first victim of this sort of incident from a Jeep, though no other deaths have been reported. Apparently, it could all be down to the electronic gear selector which doesn't work in the same way as the more typical lever which sits in certain positions for each transmission mode. Complaints have been filed to the manufacturers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by owners who have also had roll-away incidents as a result of the Jeep's confusing handling.
Fiat Chrysler reported earlier this year that there had been at least 41 injuries relating to this issue and eventually placed a recall on all vehicles with similar transmission systems. It remains unknown as to whether Yelchin's Jeep had been re-called.
More: Anton Yelchin killed at just 27
'FCA US extends its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Yelchin', the Fiat Chrysler company said in a statement. 'The Company is in contact with the authorities and is conducting a thorough investigation. It is premature to speculate on the cause of this tragedy.'
27-year-old Anton Yelchin was found dead by his friends early on Sunday morning (June 19th 2016), trapped against a brick mailbox and a security fence outside his home in San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles. He had apparently left the vehicle for some reason or another and been unable to move after his car rolled backwards towards him down his driveway. The cause of death has been ruled as blunt force asphyxia and police do not suspect foul play.
