The movie gets its first reviews.
Woody Allen's opening of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival has turned out to be quite a success, with 'Cafe Society' impressing critics with its visual style and flawless acting performances. Starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, this is a romantic drama that explores the sparkle of 1930s Hollywood life.

Allen usually has an ensemble of fantastic actors at his disposal on any of his movies, and this time it doesn't disappoint. 'Kristen Stewart is utterly captivating from the moment she first appears on screen', Flickreel said, with the Hollywood Reporter agreeing that the movie 'benefits from an exceptionally adept cast led by Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Steve Carell'.
Then there's the visual aspect of the film, courtesy of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. Flickreel describes 'Cafe Society' as 'one of Woody Allen's most visually interesting films', while Indiewire agrees that it's 'one of his snazziest efforts in some time'. The Guardian said it is 'watchable, charming and beautifully shot', though did criticise it for looking a little 'touristy'.

On the other side, some don't think 'Cafe Society' matches the high standards of some of his other work. Indiewire confessed that it 'works about as a well as a decent-but-not-great Allen movie can', and even felt that while Eisenberg and Stewart have 'an endearing screen chemistry', it never 'fully convinces'. On a similar note, Variety adds that it fails to make the audience feel the passion that it's putting across, even 'leaves you dreaming of the movie it might have been had Woody Allen made it by doing what he's done in his best work' which is, according to the publication, 'nudging himself out of his comfort zone'.
To end on a positive note though, the Telegraph describes 'Cafe Society' as a 'fine, vintage fizz' and Hollywood Reporter praised the 'genuine, if mild, poignancy at the end'. The movie is set to hit US theaters on July 15th 2016.
