He came of age, and headbutted a cop
Sandlot actor Tom Guiry, who played Smalls in the hit movie of the 1990s, has been arrested for headbutting a cop and trying to kick him in the face.
In one of the more bizarre stories to come out of tinseltown for some time, TMZ.com report how Guiry was at Bush International Airport in Houston over the weekend when a United Airlines employee concluded he was too drunk to fly. Ah, this old story huh?
The employee contacted an airport copy, who approached Guiry and gave him two options: a public intoxication arrest or jail. The former child actor took the third option, headbutt the cop after a barrage of verbal abuse.
Guiry was taken down, cuffed and booked for felony assault on a police office - which is going to carry one hell of a sentence. He posted $5,000 bail and was released.
The Sandlot - released in the UK as The Sandlot Kids - is a 1993 American sports comedy movie directed by David M. Evans. Considered one of the finest coming-of-age films of all time, it told the story of a group of young baseball players during the summer of 1962.
Guiry played the main role of Scott 'Scotty' Smalls, who moves to a new neighbourhood outside of Los Angeles with his mother (Karen Allen) and father Bill (Denis Leary). One afternoon, he watches a group of neighbourhood kids playing baseball in a small field named the 'sandlot.' He joins in the game and, although teased for his lack of skills, is given tips from Benny Rodriguez, the best player in the area.
The movie performed strongly both critically and commercially. The late Roger Ebert wrote on his review, "There was a moment in the film when Rodriguez hit a line drive directly at the pitcher's mound, and I ducked and held up my mitt, and then I realized I didn't have a mitt, and it was then I also realized how completely this movie had seduced me with its memories of what really matters when you are 12."
A sequel, The Sandlot 2 went straight to DVD in 2005.
In recent years, Guiry has appeared in Mystic River, Black Hawk Down and Steel City.
