‘Calypso’ is the first major release from Birmingham-based band The Traps. It’s released on their own label, the not-so-politically correct Speech Fewapy Records. Taking its name from the character in Homer’s ‘Odyssey,’ the track also draws from the calypso music style, mixing upbeat choppy rhythms with lilting harmonies.

The video itself sees animated sketches of the band, over a sandy background, eventually switching to an underwater scene, an old scroll floating around in the ocean. Speaking about the song, lead singer Jamie said “I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Calypso in the Odyssey. I think it is because her story isn’t really dwelt upon, but she is a tragic and flawed character denied what she desires most and they are always the most interesting. The fact that she is rarely given a voice makes her all the more intriguing and once I’d decided to write about her in this song, the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of her story guiding and influencing all the music and lyrics on the record.”

The track was recorded with Rob Jones, during sessions for their debut album, which will see the light of day later in 2013. The band are: Jamie Berry (vocals / guitar), Nick Berry (bass / vocals), James Minhas (guitar) and Daniel Webb (drums).
