Marvel is said to be looking for a director to conjure 'Doctor Strange.'
Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ movie looks set to finally become a reality as it has been reported that directors and writers are being eyed up to bring the magical character to life.
Kevin Feige, Marvel's main man has been talking about 'Doctor Strange' for a while.
Ok it might sound like we’re getting ahead of ourselves considering 'Guardians of the Galaxy’ hasn't even been released yet, but we just can’t help looking towards Marvel’s Phase 3. Whilst we know ‘Antman’ will be one of the films it looks like it’s going to be joined by a ‘Doctor Strange’ movie, which is finally coming to life. The first hint that we might be seeing ‘Doctor Strange’ on the big screen came way back in 2008 when Marvel president Kevin Feige told MTV, ‘I'd say in the next year, year and a half, as we start putting together our film slate for 2012 and 2013, I would not be shocked if we saw Dr. Strange on those lists. I love the idea of tapping into the magical realm of the Marvel Universe." Sadly this never happened, but then six years later, last month, Feige was back discussing Phase 3 films with MTV, and revealed “Doctor Strange, which I've been talking about for years, is definitely one of them.”
In order to bring the character, who is unusual even by comic standards to life, Marvel will need an excellent director. The Hollywood Reporter claims that they have met with four contenders, Mark Andrews, Jonathan Levine, Nokolaj Arcel and Dean Isrealitte. While none of these names jump to the fore, each have their own unique credentials that could make them a perfect fit for the job. Andrew’s made his directorial debut with ‘Brave’ but had worked extensively with Pixar before, including as story supervisor on 'The Incredibles'. Levine is best known for 2013’s ‘Warm Bodies’, which shows he could do a good job mixing a bit of humour with the supernatural if he as to take on the role. Arcel may seem an odd choice, the Danish filmmaker wrote the screenplay for the Swedish version of ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ and won acclaim for 2012’s historical drama ‘A Royal Affair’. The real dark horse, however, is Dean Isrealitte, the relative newcomer will release time travel thriller, 'Welcome to Yesterday' later this year.
We're only just getting over the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trailer
Along with a director Marvel are also shopping for a writer. An original draft was made years ago by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly and there’s no word if any of this will be used. Instead it’s rumoured ‘Kung Fu Panda’ writers Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are being approached with Marvel wanting either a writer and a filmmaker who can work together or a filmmaker who can do both.
It’s about time that this magical comic creation finally got a proper big screen outing. He first appeared in the comic ‘Strange Tales No. 110’ in 1963. Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange was a brilliant but greedy neurosurgeon who’s career is left in jeopardy after a car accident damages his hands. Strange’s search for a cure leads him to a scorcher called ‘The Ancient One’ in the Himalayas who teaches him the mystic arts, transforming himself into 'the mightiest magician in the cosmos’. While we'll have to wait a while before the 'Doctor Strange' movie is a reality, luckily there's always plenty happening in that Marvel Universe to keep us going namely the forthcoming 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.
