Rocker Scott Stapp Knew He Was In Desperate Need Of Help Following A Serious Mental Breakdown Last Year (14) After Experiencing A "Moment Of Clarity" And Realising He Could Lose His Family For Good If He Didn't Turn His Life Around.
The former Creed frontman hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons in November (14) after Florida police found him wandering along the side of a road babbling incoherently.
He was placed on a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold, but his erratic behaviour continued for months afterwards, during which he became convinced his loved ones were involved with terrorists working for ISIS and made threats to assassinate U.S. President Barack Obama.
Stapp also lost custody of his three children and his wife Jaclyn filed for divorce, but it was only when she began bombarding him with text messages featuring photos of their kids after the winter holidays (Dec14) that he started to see clearly again and checked into rehab.
He tells People magazine, "I had a moment of clarity and realised if I don't go to treatment I'm going to lose my wife and my kids. I started to ask myself, 'Oh my God, what have I done?'"
Stapp was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during a 90-day treatment programme, which he completed in March (15), and now he admits his lowest low came as he began arming himself with a shotgun.
He tells ABC News, "I was so out of my mind, delusional, turned on everyone that I loved. I was driving around with a 12-gauge shotgun in my lap, and I thought that people were trying to kill me."
Stapp blames his breakdown on prescription medication Adderall, confessing he was taking "double the legal dosage" of the amphetamine, but now he is grateful to be clean and sober and he wants to focus on rebuilding his marriage and focusing on his family.
He says, "I think the best is yet to come."
