Review of The Obliterati Album by Mission Of Burma
Artist - Mission Of Burma
Album - The Obliterati
Label - Matador
Mission of Burma have been around for some time now. Their first time around was between 1979 and 1983, and they then reformed in 2002, maintaining their post-punk sound and same essential energy. The Obliterati follows 2004's ONoffON in pursuing the original rebellious spirit of punk, and tops that album in its accessibility. But, this isn't a polished piece of work. Although Roger Miller occasionally sounds like he's trying to sing, the melodies are more functional than uplifting, and the sound of 1970s punk is adhered to in a way that suggests historical re-enactment rather than new drama. Bands like Social Distortion do this whole thing so much better, unless you are very keen to immerse yourself in the kind of music the Stooges and MC5 threw away.
