Melissa Leo, the American actress best known for playing Detective Sgt Kay Howard on the crime television series 'Homicide: Life on the Street', took home the award for 'Best Supporting Actress' at last night's Golden GlobeS. The 50-year-old was honoured for her performance in the acclaimed movie 'The Fighter' and her co-star Christian Bale walked away with 'Best Supporting Actor'.
Leo received an OSCAR nomination in 2009 for her performance in the drama 'Frozen River' and award winners at the GOLDEN GLOBES are often recognised by the Academy in their list of nominees. Leo fended off stiff competition from Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, Mila Kunis and Jacki Weaver to win the GOLDEN GLOBE and she accepted the award from British actor Jeremy Irons. During her acceptance speech she said, "Look mom, I got a Golden Globe!" Leo plays 'Alice Ward' the mother of boxer Micky Ward in 'The Fighter' and speaking to the Hollywood Foreign Press after the ceremony she said, "I think that women being engaged and participating in boxing is a modern day kind of thing, that quite frankly, for my money, comes after Alice Ward's time. When she was doing it, it was strictly a men's game; so the world has come a long way".
'The Fighter' is expected to receive an OSCAR nomination for 'Best Film' and is likely to fight it out with blockbusters such as 'The Social Network', 'Inception' and 'The Kings Speech'.
