Cult Jewish Reggae Artist Matisyahu's Upcoming Festival Appearance At Rototom Sunsplash In Spain Has Been Axed After He Refused To Reply To A Demand To Clarify His Position On Palestinian Statehood.
Organisers of the event near Valencia scrapped his set following pressure from Spanish supporters of Palestine, who are demanding a boycott of Israel over the country's policies towards Palestinians.
Announcing the decision over the weekend (15-16Aug15), a spokesman for the organisers said, "Rototom Sunsplash, after having repeatedly sought dialogue in the face of the artist's unavailability to give a clear statement against war and on the right of the Palestinian people to their own state, has decided to cancel the concert."
The statement has been met with anger and disappointment from officials at the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities, who have condemned the decision as cowardly, unjust and discriminatory.
And on Monday (17Aug15), World Jewish Congress President Ronald Lauder expressed outrage, urging Spanish authorities to reprimand "those responsible".
Matisyahu, real name Matthew Miller, has yet to comment on the drama ahead of a concert in Belgium, scheduled for Monday (17Aug15).
