Comedian Jon Stewart has returned to his hosting duties on US political news satire show, The Daily Show, after he took a 12 week sabbatical to spent time working on Middle Eastern political documentary Rosewater. In his absence, the excellently funny Brit comic John Oliver kept his presenting seat warm.

On the Tuesday night show, Stewart opened by letting his audience know how much he missed them: "You don't know what it's like out there in the real world. Nobody applauds every stupid little thing you do."

Whilst filming in the Middle East, he also managed to pop by Egypt's Daily show equivalent, Al-Bernameg, as a surprise guest interviewed by his Egyptian counterpart, Bassem Yousef. Brought out as a hooded captive, Stewart delighted Egyptian viewers as he was unmasked. As Stewart undoubtedly recognised, Bassem's job is a lot more risky than his own on the American program, yet argued that "satire is a settled law. If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke, then you have no regime," to wild cheers from the studio audience.

Instead Of Going On Holiday, Jon Worked On Other Projects & Guested On Other Shows.

Back in the USA, and Stewart has to somehow make humor out of the horrors of the Syrian crisis. After Stephen Colbert was brought in to "de-Middle Eastern" him with a 'big mac defibrilator,' Stewart said that the man lesson he learned in the middle east was "I'm Western." "Boy, I'm western, in all its glorious imperfections. I remembered thinking, 'Hello dildo shop next to a school," he joked.

In a segment titled "Uncle Jonny Stew's Good Time Syria Jamboree," Obama's red line was mocked, as well as right wing hawkers he branded as "the idiot parade." "America taking action against a Middle East regime? It's like I never left," he remarked, drawing comparisons between the Iraq war of George Bush's presidency and the Syrian problems Obama now faces.

Stewart's Rosewater movie is adapted from the memoir written by Maziar Bahari - an Iranian journalist who wrote his account of being imprisoned after falsely being accused of being a spy during 2009.

Oliver's stint as host gave Daily Show fans hope that the satire show could function without its seemingly irreplaceable host, should he ever step out for good. However, as Stewart demonstrated as he returned to his post, bearded and tanned, on Tuesday, no one does that trademark impeccably indignant humour as well as Jon.

Stewart will travel to the Toronto Film Festival this weekend to pitch his Gael Garcia Bernal-starring Rosewater documentary to select foreign buyers, and is likely to be one of the most popular events of the film market, according to THR.
