‘The Daily Show’ contributor Trevor Noah could be the next in line to take over from the departing Jon Stewart, according to a report by Variety. The 31 year old South African comedian was recruited to the show by Stewart himself back in December and is now said to have quickly moved up on Comedy Central’s shortlist for the host’s chair.

A source familiar with the matter has reportedly told Variety that Noah is gaining consideration as a potential successor to Stewart, thought they did caution that ‘no final decision has been reached’. The source did however add that Comedy Central’s selection process has accelerated in recent days, with Noah’s name moving on to a short list being put together by executives at the network.

Deadline has also picked up on the buzz surrounding Noah as Stewart’s potential replacement. However when Comedy Central was contacted by the website for comment the network stated, “We are not commenting or providing guidance on any speculation about any individuals.”
Noah joined 'The Daily Show' in December after making a name for himself on television in his native South Africa. In 2012 he became the first South African stand-up to appear on 'The Tonight Show' and a year later he became the first to appear on 'The Late Show With David Letterman'.
