Uggie, the dog who almost stole the show in the Oscar-winning silent film 'The Artist', has announced his retirement from show business - well, the man who trains him has had to announce it for him, obviously. The Jack Russell terrier became a sensation as the able sidekick of Jean Dujardin's main character in the hugely successful French movie, and was recently awarded for his efforts by getting to become the first dog to leave his prints besides the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in front of Hollywood's famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Some actors would probably give a few limbs for that honor.
Reuters reports that Uggie was dressed in a black bow tie, and happily posed for reporters before dipping his paws into the wet cement. The 10 year-old looked as happy as ever, exuding a youthful exuberance beyond his advancing dog years, although his trainer Omar Von Muller was firm on his retirement from any further movie roles. He will however still be about for charity appearances.
Thanking Uggie's fans and admirers, Von Muller went on to comment "Everybody thinks I am great trainer. I don't think so. I think he is just a great dog". The ceremony capped a phenomenal few months for the pup, who'd also won the 2011 Palm Dog Award at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Golden Collar Award in Los Angeles this February.
