Imelda Staunton has won a UK Theatre Award for her performance in Gypsy. Staunton received the award for Best Musical Performance at the UK Theatre Awards 2015 at London’s Guildhall on Sunday (18th October).

Staunton plays Momma Rose, the overbearing and pushy mother of Gypsy characters Louise and June, in the production which is currently showing on the West End. The production transferred to the West End in April after a successful run in Chichester. The production, at the Savoy Theatre, is proving so successful that its run has been extended until 28th November.
The 59-year-old British actor, best known for her roles in Harry Potter as Dolores Umbridge and the title character in Vera Drake, is no stranger to musical roles. She has previously appeared in stage productions of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Into the Woods and Guys and Dolls. She has also been nominated for eight Laurence Olivier Awards, including winning two of Best Actress for Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods.
Gypsy also won the UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production. Other winners on Sunday included Dame Eileen Atkins who received the Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts. Atkins’ award was presented by Sir Patrick Stewart and congratulations were sent by Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. 81-year-old Atkins is best known as the co-creator of Upstairs Downstairs and for her work in television, film and theatre which spans over seven decades.
