The Cyrano de Bergerac star is poised to appear in Marseille, playing the Southern French city's mayor for the past 25 years, according to Variety.

The programme will be Netflix's first French-language production, and is reportedly similar in theme to the company's other hit series, House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey.

The eight-episode series is created and written by Carlos screenwriter Dan Franck.

Depardieu's latest project, Valley of Love, recently received a standing ovation from audience members at the Cannes Film Festival following its official screening on Thursday (21May15).

The film marked the onscreen reunion of Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert, 35 years after their collaboration in Maurice Pialat's Loulou.
