Craig David upset the odds to win Best Male Act at the 2016 MOBO Awards last night, a full 15 years after he last won such an award.

The 35 year old singer-songwriter, who also landed his first chart-topping record in the UK since 2000 with Following My Intuition last month, beat out competition from Mercury Prize-winner Skepta, Stormzy, Kano and Tinie Tempah to land the trophy.

David also performed at the ceremony on Friday night (November 4th) at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro Arena, alongside other stars such as Professor Green, Clean Bandit and Wiley. This year’s ‘Strictly’ contestant and Kiss FM DJ Melvin Odoom hosted, alongside his colleague Rickie Haywood Williams.

Canadian rapper Drake was another big winner, edging Beyonce and Chris Brown to earn Best International Act. Lady Leshurr beat Katy B, Nao and Laura Mvula to Best Female Act, while the red-hot favourite for Best Album, Skepta’s much-heralded Konnichiwa, lost out to fellow grime act Kano’s Made In The Manor.

Upon winning his MOBO, David told the crowd in his speech: “I'm overwhelmed and honoured. The public have supported me from the beginning. To be back here with a new album it's just crazy. I just want to thank everyone who's been there since 1999 and the Artful Dodger days.

“The crowds here have been amazing over the course of my 16 years performing, so to be actually able to perform here again - and the MOBOs have supported me from 2000, so it's been an amazing journey. It's a celebration of music and I'm just happy to be a part of it to be honest.”

However, the night did not go off without a hitch, in the shape of a horrendous blunder when the wrong act was announced as winners of Best Song. R&B trio WSTRN got all the way up to the podium and even began their acceptance speech before producers stepped in and apologetically announced that the winner was, in fact, MC Abra Cadabra.

Tinie Tempah also pulled out of a scheduled performance on the night at the last minute, citing “industry politics”…
