Music fans have always debated who Carly Simon’s 1972 classic ‘You’re So Vain’ could be about, but it’s Warren Beatty’s name which comes up most often. Now the singer has finally revealed that Beatty did at least inspire part of the song, namely it’s second verse.

Speaking to People magazine, Simon said, ”I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren.” When asked if the actor was aware that he inspired a verse in the song Simon joked, "Warren thinks the whole thing is about him!”

The second verse, which Beatty inspired, contains the lyrics: ‘You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive/ Well you said that we made such a pretty pair/ And that you would never leave But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me/ I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee/ Clouds in my coffee, and …'

But as for who inspired the rest of the song, that’s a secret Simon still wants to keep. The singer did say that the other two verse were written about two different men. But when asked if she’ll ever reveal their names Simon answered: "I don't think so, at least until they know it's about them."

'Probably, if we were sitting over at dinner and I said: 'remember that time you walked into the party and ... " she added. "I don't know if I'll do it. I never thought I would admit that it was more than one person!"

Simon was previously married to singer James Taylor and has also been linked to stars including Mick Jagger, Kris Kristofferson, Jack Nicholson and Cat Stevens, all of whom have been rumoured to have inspired the famous song. As for the public’s fascination with the song subject, Simon commented: "Why do they want to know? It's so crazy!"
