Walters joined iconic characters including Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Grover, and the show's co-creator Joan Ganz Cooney, for the plush celebrations at the Cipriani restaurant in New York.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday (21Apr14) that the broadcaster's final appearance on her talk show The View on 16 May (14) will be declared Barbara Walters Day. She will retire from the programme she launched after 17 years.
