Antonio Banderas has revealed that the health scare he suffered in January was in fact a heart attack.

On January 26, the actor was taken to hospital near his home in Surrey after experiencing chest pains while working out. While the actor previously dismissed his hospitalisation as an ‘episode’, he has now confirmed that he suffered a non-serious heart attack.

Speaking at a film festival in his home town of Malaga, Spain, the actor said: "I suffered a heart attack on January 26, but it wasn't serious and hasn't caused any damage.”

He added that he had three stents put in his arteries but insisted the incident had not been “dramatic”, according to the BBC. The 56-year-old also said he was well and keen to return to work.

Banderas was in attendance at the festival to accept a lifetime achievement award, recognising his career as an actor, producer and director.

In January The Sun reported that Banderas had been taken to hospital after he suddenly started experiencing ‘agonising chest pains’ while exercising at his Surrey home.

Banderas later confirmed he had suffered an “episode” and praised the medics who had helped him. Days later he reassured fans by posting a selfie while on a country walk with girlfriend Nicole Kimpel and writing: ”enjoying nature after a startle.”
