Hotel Transylvania 2 has taken the top spot at the US box office this weekend, with an impressive $47.5 million opening. The animated sequel features the voice of Adam Sandler and gives the actor a welcome box office win after suffering flops with recent films, Pixels and Blended.

The film has also set a new September box office record, beating the first Hotel Transylvania movie which took $42.5 million in 2012. It is also the biggest opening that studio Sony has enjoyed since 22 Jump Street’s $57 million opening in June 2014.

Speaking to Variety, Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution said, “It’s on its way to being one of the most beloved franchises of all time. There are a lot of stories left to tell. Adam and the filmmakers have created an unforgettable animated world that plays to audiences everywhere.”

Staying steady at number three was young adult adventure Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which added $14 million to its total. Disaster flick Everest managed $13.1 million in its second week, thanks to Universal expanding it from over 500 Imax screens to 3,006 locations.

The top five was then rounded off by thriller Black Mass which fell less than 50% in its second weekend, grossing another $11.5 million to bring its US total to $42.6 million. The film stars Johnny Depp as real-life mobster Whitey Bulger and also features Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The week’s only other new entry was from Eli Roth’s low budget horror flick Green Inferno. It earned $3.5 million from 1,540 locations, just over half of its $6 million budget. The film follows a young college student who encounters cannibals during a group trip to Peru.
