  • 23 November 2015

It's a criminal understatement to say we're looking forward to Eddie Redmayne's female debut in 'The Danish Girl'. He just can't be praised enough for going full force into one of the most important LGBT stories in history; that of Lili Elba, one of the first trans-women to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Thus, this essential story will be shown at The White House today (November 23rd 2015).

4. 'Freeheld' - Similarly about two female lovers of very different ages, this is a true story of the turmoil that beheld police detective Laurel Hester and car mechanic Stacie Andree in 2005 when Laurel was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They did everything in their power to ensure that her pension benefits would be passed on to Stacie so that she could continue living in their home, but suffered significant pitfalls in that they were not a legal couple (i.e. they were unmarried). Julianne Moore and Ellen Page starred in the movie.

5. 'Jenny's Wedding' - Another story about ladies in love, 'Jenny's Wedding' is a comedy drama about the struggles one woman faces in the run up to her wedding with her girlfriend. Her family remain unaware of her identity, and even when they find out, Jenny finds herself having to explain a lot more than she bargained for to her ignorant relatives.

6. 'Stonewall' - Arguably one of the landmark events in LGBT history, 'Stonewall' follows the 1969 riots in New York City which saw the gay liberation movement bring about huge social change. Starring Jeremy Irvine, Jonny Beauchamp and Caleb Landry Jones, it depicts the violent police clashes with startling brutality.
