Garden State star launches Kickstarter project for sequel, Wish I Was Here
Zach Braff has launched a Kickstarter project in order to start filming a sequel to his cult comedy Garden State, which starred Natalie Portman. Inspired by the success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter and wishing to be free from the creative shackles of a studio-funded release, Braff is looking to raise $2 million for the project and has already raked in a pretty successful sum.
The dramatic comedy that he’s looking to fund is entitled Wish I Was Here and was co-written by Zach and his brother Adam Braff. Zach has described the feature as a thematic sequel to Garden State and it follows the story of a father / husband / struggling actor; a man in his 30s. “After I saw the incredible way Veronica Mars fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show's creator Rob Thomas, I couldn't help but think maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away all your artistic control,” said Braff in his comic promotional video.
So far, the tugging on heart-strings has been a huge success. At the time of writing, over $436,000 has been pledged and that total is racking up dollar after dollar as the seconds go by. A deadline of May 24th has been set for the $2 million that Braff is looking to raise. At this rate, that should be achieved by the end of the week.
