The rest of the top five was made up of Now you See Me, Star Trek Into Darkness and Epic
It's probably safe to say that no-one saw the runaway success of the sixth instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise coming from a mile off, but the film is still riding high atop the US Box Office after another weekend worth of impressive ticket sales. Meanwhile, the Will Smith staring box office debutant After Earth failed to make much impact in cinemas at all, only reaching the third spot in the box office with a disappointing weekend gross of $27 million.
F&F6's speedy success looks to be waning though, and there should probably be a new number one at the box office next week if the figures continue to drop. The film managed to only collect $34.5 million over the weekend, however that places it's overall earnings at the US box office at a very impressive $170.4 million, earning around $480.1 million worldwide. Whilst F&F6 is now fast on it's way to becoming the most successful instalment of the film series, the weekend also saw the first box office slump for a Will Smith summer blockbuster since 1999's Wild Wild West, with the film also grossing the second lowest amount a Smith summer blockbuster has ever managed, after his first movie role in Made In America.
Despite the frankly disastrous weekend takings for the M. Night Shyamalan film, producers at Sony are hoping the film can recoup most of it's budget in the international market, however the film's cinematic run will have to be longer than the runway in F&F6 if it wants to make any significant contribution in the box office.

The weekend also saw another surprise turn, with the number two spot being taken by the thriller Now You See Me, which squeezed between F&F6 and After Earth with $28.1 million in takings. The surprise success of the Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher, and Mark Ruffalo-starring thriller should mean box office safety for the film's producers, who were expecting a $80 million return in the box office overall. The rest of the top five was made up of Star Trek Into Darkness and the animated Epic, whilst the seriously disappointing The Hangover III fell out of the top five after only one week.
