Whoopi Goldberg Is Changing Her Stance On The Bill Cosby Sex Scandal After Previously Declaring The Funnyman Is "Innocent Until Proven Guilty", Admitting The Mounting Evidence Against Him "Looks Bad".
The Ghost star has long maintained The Cosby Show veteran should not simply be judged by the more than 30 women who have made decades-old allegations of inappropriate behaviour and rape against him, insisting authorities would have arrested or charged him over the claims if there was any reason to suspect his guilt.
However, during Tuesday's (14Jul15) episode of her U.S. talk show The View, Goldberg publicly admitted she was starting to have doubts about Cosby's denials after learning his alleged victims have no way of having him tried in court, because the statute of limitations on their accusations has long expired.
During a chat with ABC News' Chief Legal Analyst Dan Abrams, she asked, "Why is there a statute of limitations? I always thought that rape cases were open-ended..."
She continued, "So, what we've learned is there's no recourse for these women, except what they're doing. If this is to be tried in the court of public opinion, I gotta say, the information that's out there kinda points to guilt...
"Again, I always thought they (alleged victims) would have the opportunity to take them (accused rapist) to court, but... that's not so... People don't know that there is no way for him to go to jail... You have a serial rapist... who's been on the streets for 30 years. I have to say that I thought, 'Here's all the information, take his a** to jail...'
"I find out... that that's not possible, so I can't say anymore, 'Innocent until proven guilty'. I can't say that anymore because there's no way to prove it."
Speaking directly into the camera, Goldberg then addressed Cosby himself, saying, "It looks bad, Bill. Either speak up (to tell your side of the story) or shut up."
Goldberg then used the opportunity to encourage victims of sexual misconduct to speak out and report incidents to police before it's too late, while also throwing her support behind a movement to strike down the statue of limitations in allegations of rape.
Goldberg's change of heart comes a week after Cosby's deposition in a 2005 sex assault case, which was settled out of court, was made public. In the testimony, the actor admitted to obtaining the sedative Quaaludes to give to women he wanted to sleep with.
Following the Ghost star's initial comments following the release of the testimony, former model Janice DICkinson, who is among the women accusing Cosby of inappropriate behaviour, called for the actress to be fired from The View, calling her "stupid".
