Hey, Dolce & Gabbana! Victoria Beckham IS A Real Designer, Here's Why

Poor Victoria Beckham! The ex-Spice Girl once admitted that she’d “always dreamed of designing a [fashion] collection”, but now that she’s finally been recognised as a credible designer by most of the fashion world, Dolce and Gabbana have come along to burst her bubble. Domenico Dolce, partner of Stefano Gabbana, the Italian designers behind fashion power house D&G, recently attended the Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014 event where he told reporters, “[Victoria] She make a good job, but...for us, she don’t make the same way like a fashion designer...She’s a fashion designer, but it’s another...it’s different. John Galliano is a designer...Alexander McQueen”. He added that “Victoria Beckham, Zara, H&M” were “professional” designers, which are apparently “completely different” to Italian designers, who are “more cool, more trendy”. Ouch.

Since designing her debut fashion line for label Rock & Republic in 2004, Victoria has worked tirelessly to transform herself from a celebrity dabbling in clothes design to a bonafide high fashion designer. Her runway shows have become one of the highlights of international fashion weeks, while her collections have evolved each season and received rave reviews from critics.

With the cheapest of her ready to wear dresses from the current line priced at around $1300, Victoria certainly doesn’t appear to see herself as on parr with high street brands H&M and Zara, who retail affordable fashion. Creating a chic line with high fashion prices, which has been consistently praised by critics, Victoria must have thought she’d finally achieved her dreams. So it must have stung to hear that Gabbana still doesn’t recognise her as a true fashion designer. We wonder if he’ll be getting an invite to her 40th birthday party on April 17th?

Victoria has certainly come into her own as a designer over the past few years, whether it’s appreciated by the Italian fashion moguls or not. Gabbana wasn’t too harsh on all British designers though, explaining “Vivienne Westwood is one of the most important fashion designers in the world.” We’re sure Viv will be pleased to hear she wasn’t bundled into a category with Primark and River Island.

From seeing Victoria's line for ourselves we think that she deserves a lot more credit.  Gabbana's views sound a little narrow minded, and dare we say it, snobby to us.  Victoria is still a fledgling designer who always shows potential as well as exhibiting sheer enthusiasm for the industry.  Each collection is an improvement on the last, hopefully Stefano Gabbana can at least recognise and praise that.
