U2 frontman Bono has reportedly injured his arm riding his bicycle around Central Park in New York and is set to undergo surgery for the problem. So says U2’s official website. In a message to their fans, the band (or their PR person, anyway) wrote: "We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back!"

This puts a spoke in the wheel of their upcoming week-long residency on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The gigs have been postponed indefinitely.

"Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding," the statement continued.

The statement did not reveal how long it would take to “repair” the frontman’s arm, but depending on the type of injury it could be anywhere between a couple of weeks and a couple of months. And yes, they did use the exact word “repair,” which can only point to one conclusion – Bono has finally achieved humanity’s dream of becoming a cyborg and his arm is actually one of the mechanised parts.

The injury, which puts the musician and humanitarian out of commission for a while, comes at a fairly busy time for U2. Bono flew back to the US after taking part in the Band Aid 30 charity single recording in London on Saturday. The recording, which comes 30 years after the original, is raising money for the fight against Ebola.

After the campaign, the Tonight Show residency was intended as part of the band's promotional tour for their album Songs of Innocence. The band came in for criticism after the album was automatically added to the libraries of all iTunes users around the world

Bono apologised in a session on Facebook, calling the move... wait for it... a "drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity".
