The 'Saving Mr. Banks' actor has praised a man named Tony for making New York City ''even greater'' after he found the plastic in the street and ensured its safe return.
Tom tweeted: ''A guy named Tony found my credit card on the street in NYC and returned it! Tony! You make this city even greater! Thanx. HANX (sic)''
While the 58-year-old actor was thankful for the stranger's actions, he is also renowned for his own good deeds.
Last month, he surprised a group of Girl Scouts in San Francisco when he bought four boxes of cookies for them and donated an additional $20.
He even agreed to pose for photos with fans - but only if they also bought cookies from the girls.
Archana Appanna, whose daughter was one of the Scouts, said: ''I'm still on cloud nine.
''He was so personable. So down to earth.''
