Not many movies hold a 100% fresh rating, but here's 10 that have managed the impossible.
It's hard to find a perfect movie, but some films do manage the honour of scoring a 100% 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There hasn't been that many since 1990 but here's a run down of the movies with 100 Rotten Tomatoes' percentage points!
'Toy Story', a hit with critics more than once
'The Witches' (1990)
The big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1993 novel of the same name was not a box office smash. However the performance of Anjelica Huston along with the excellent work of Jim Henson’s creature shop made it a hit with critics and later audiences. Variety said of the movie,”The wizardry of Jim Henson's Creature Shop and a superbly over-the-top performance by Angelica Huston gives The Witches a good deal of charm and enjoyment.”
Bob Roberts (1992)
Tim Robbin’s political satire lampooned right-wing American politicians and marked the actor’s directorial debut. The character was first played by Robbins on 'Saturday Night Live' on 1986. It was best described by Todd McCarthy in Variety as “A sort of political This Is Spinal Tap, Bob Roberts is both a stimulating social satire and, for thinking people, a depressing commentary on the devolution of the American political system."
'The Crying Game' (1992)
This film about an IRA soldier was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winning Best Original screenplay for Neil Jordan who also directed. It received critical acclaim with Barry McIlheney of Empire Magazine calling it a"finely-acted, sensitively-written tale".
'Before Sunrise' (1995)
Ethan Hawke and Julie Deply star in this simple romantic drama following an American man and a French woman who meet on a train and spent the rest of the night walking around Vienna and getting to know each other. It has since spawned two sequels, 'Before Sunset' in 2004 and 'Before Midnight' in 2013, both were well received by critics but only the original holds a 100% fresh rating.
Toy Story (1996)
Woody and Buzz’s first outing was critically acclaimed as well as being a box office smash.The film became an instant classic for both children and adults a like. Time Out critic Derek Adams described it as “So ingenious in concept, design and execution that you could watch it on a postage stamp-sized screen and still be engulfed by its charm”, after its 3-D re-release.
Toy Story 2 (1999)
The sequel to 'Toy Story' also managed a 100% fresh rating with critics finding it equal to the first instalment. Fans would have to wait another 11 years for the third 'Toy Story' instalment which narrowly misses out on an 100% fresh rating, getting a 99% instead.
'Taxi to the Dark Side '(2007)
This documentary explores the CIA’s use of torture, focusing on the killing of an Afghan taxi driver. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentaty Feature and is third highest-rated film in Rotten Tomatoes history.
'Man on Wire'(2008)
This British documentary tells the story of Philippe Petit's who in 1974 attempted a high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center. It would go on to win the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
'The Waiting Room' (2012)
Focusing on patients and staff at Oakland California’s Highland Hosptial, 'The Waiting Room' is both a documentary and a series of blogs looking at life in an American caring for mostly uninsured patients. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle said it was “human drama at its most intense and universal. This is the rare film that can change the way you think and see the world.”
'Sound City' (2013)
Foo fighter’s Dave Grohl tells the story of Sound City Studios in Los Angeles which has played host to artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana and Neil Young. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said of Grohl, “In his directing debut, Dave Grohl shows the instincts of a real filmmaker. 'Sound City' hits you like a shot in the heart.”
