Two crew members were killed and one seriously injured when their twin-engine Aerostar crashed in the Andes on Friday (11Sep15) after encountering bad weather following take-off from Santa Fe de Antioquia.

Atlanta, Georgia resident Jimmy Lee Garland was the only one to be rescued from the wreckage and he was admitted to a hospital in Medellin.

Doctors performed surgery on him to treat bone fractures on Monday, but he remains heavily sedated as he continues on the road to recovery.

The two who died in the crash have been identified as American pilot Alan David Purwin and Colombian Carlos Berl.

Cruise, who is a trained pilot, was not on board the plane at the time of the incident.

The actor arrived in Colombia last month (Aug15) to start work on the film, which follows the story of a pilot who worked for notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.

Neither he nor director Doug Limon had commented on the tragedy as WENN went to press.
