Taylor Swift’s chart dominance looks set to be total this week as midweek sales figures put her new album 1989 at number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic.

Taylor Swift is set for a simultaneous British and American chart-topper on Sunday

In the UK, the new album has sold over 60,000 copies in just three days since its release on Monday, more than the rest of the current Top Five combined. 1989 would be the US singer’s second number 1 album following 2012’s Red. The final placings will be revealed on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday afternoon (2nd November).

Elsewhere in the UK midweek charts, there are three other new entries in the Top 10. Annie Lennox’s new album Nostalgia is at number 6, and two Led Zeppelin reissues – IV and Houses of the Holy – sit at numbers 5 and 7 respectively.

In the singles chart, Ed Sheeran’s new single ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is threatening to dethrone Meghan Trainor’s irritating ‘All About That Bass’ after its four consecutive weeks at the top.

Some sources in the States believe that Swift could sell over a million copies of her fifth album in one week alone, and perhaps as high as 1.2 million. No album has racked up a seven figure debut sales week since… Swift’s last album two years ago. Over all outlets, 1989 sold over 600,000 copies on its first day of release. If it sells as projected, it would be the biggest selling album of 2014 after just one week on sale. Gulp!

Many have noted the musical departure from her country origins on 1989, which is a rather more conventional pop affair, as indicated by the infectious lead single ‘Shake It Off’. Also this week, Swift announced that she would donate all proceeds of her newest single ‘Welcome To New York’ to the city’s public schools, following some disgruntlement at her appointment as ‘Global Welcome Ambassador’ for NY.
