An argument that’s been brewing in Australia over Taylor Swift’s mega-hit ‘Shake It Off’ is due to decided on Monday. A week-long social media campaign organised by BuzzFeed has endeavoured to get the song recognised in radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown of the year, using the hashtag #Tay4Hottest100.

No problem, you’d think. But Triple J has a rule disqualifying tracks that are endorsed by commercial interests, and when fast food giant KFC rolled out a campaign to encourage fans to vote for their favourite Taylor Swift song in exchange for vouchers, it might have breached that rule as it gives fans an incentive to vote.

‘Shake It Off’ was not included in the 2000-plus songs played on air in 2014, therefore meaning it’s not on the list that fans can vote from. However, the poll traditionally includes a blank space (thank you!) in which fans can write the name and song of any artist they want, therefore not preventing ‘Shake It Off’ from making the final list, theoretically.

But of course, KFC’s involvement may have scuppered the track’s chances because of that rule. To make matters even more frustrating for Taylor’s lovers and haters, the radio station has enforced a ban on all of its staff from saying whether or not the song is eligible, or not.

The confusion has certainly got passions running high, with Swift’s fans boycotting both the Hottest 100 list and KFC. Social media has been the battleground, predictably. “You've ruined #Tay4Hottest100 KFC! Arrghh!!!” said one angry Swift fan on Facebook.

As the song says, though, haters gon’ hate, hate hate. “Fantastic. For the first time ever KFC has done something useful and gotten Taylor Swift disqualified from the hottest 100,” said a hater. Each to their own, clearly. It just goes to show how divisive pop music can be, even in 2015.

BuzzFeed journalist Mark Di Stefano has spearheaded the #Tay4Hottest100 campaign, but has been unable to get any clarification on the situation. All will be revealed on Monday 26th January, which is Australia’s official national holiday.
