The areas will be the largest single-themed expansions in the company's history, according to Thomas Staggs, chief operating officer of Walt Disney Co.

The 14-acre parks will form part of the existing Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida.

Fans of the sci-fi film franchise will be able to live out their Star Wars dreams as they fly the Millennium Falcon, visit a Star Wars cantina, and meet characters from the movies in the "immersive experience".

Disney chairman and chief executive Robert Iger has not revealed when the parks will be ready to open, but insists the new collaboration between Disney Parks and Star Wars will be "jaw-dropping".

He adds, "These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance."

The next installment of the sci-fi saga, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, starring Harrison Ford, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac, is due for release on 18 December (15).
