Sir Paul McCartney has praised Nirvana following his performance with the surviving members of the grunge group on Friday (19.07.13), saying they brought a ''great power'' to the stage during his gig at Seattle's Safeco Field.
Sir Paul McCartney says there was ''great power'' on stage when he performed with Nirvana on Friday (19.07.13).
The Beatles legend brought the grunge group's surviving members, drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and touring guitarist Pat Smear, onto the stage during his gig at Seattle's Safeco Field for the band's second ever performance in their hometown since frontman Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994.
Nirvana joined Paul on 'Cut Me Some Slack' - a track they recorded for Dave's Sound City documentary last year - as well as 'The End', 'Get Back', 'Helter Skelter' and Little Richard's 'Long Tall Sally'.
He said: ''They're powerful, you know. It's a great power to have them on stage with you. I mean, my band's great - but when you augment it with Nirvana, that's greater.
''When you're playing with guys like that, you realise that they've been to the heights of fame, so they're used to it - they're not gonna freak.
''And they're hell of musicians, so we learned everything really quickly. That's what's great about playing with guys like that.''
Paul - who fronted a Nirvana reunion on stage halfway through his set at Madison Square Garden, New York, at a Hurricane Sandy 12.12.12 benefit concert in December - suggested another reunion to Dave weeks ago and was delighted when the Foo Fighters frontman helped him to set up the performance.
He added to Rolling Stone: ''We hatched that plan a couple of weeks ago. Dave was going to come up to Seattle with his family, and I said to him, 'Do you think there's any chance the guys would fancy [a reunion]?' He said, 'Well, let me ask.' And they fancied it. So we thought, 'Let's go and flip 'em out.''
