With his new film Neighbors (titled Bad Neighbours internationally), filmmaker Nicholas Stoller is taking on Judd Apatow for the adult-comedy title. He has previous experience in the genre, from Forgetting Sarah Marshall to The Five-year Engagement, but this time he's actually teamed up with Apatow protege Seth Rogen, who stars and produces with his filmmaking partner Evan Goldberg.

Even more notable is the fact that Neighbors is brisk and smart, gleefully rude and also warmly dramatic without ever getting sentimental. Which is a striking contrast to Apatow's more indulgent, overlong style of filmmaking (see This Is 40 or Funny People).

And Neighbors has had some of the best reviews of the year so far for a comedy, gathering four-star praise across the board. The film has 75% approval from Rotten Tomatoes critics and a 7.6/10 rating from users on the IMDb, which indicates that it's likely to be a major box office hit.

In the UK the film had a sneaky advanced release last Saturday to cash in on the three day weekend. It earned enough to top the box office, easily beating heavy-hitters The Amazing Spider-man 2 and The Other Woman, but the money wasn't included in last week's chart because those screenings were technically previews. Look for the film to make a major box office splash when those figures are included in this weekend's tally.
