Just in case you were thinking of hacking into a celebrity’s phone any time soon and snatching naked pics of that celebrity to plaster on the internet, let this be a lesson to you. Christopher Chaney, 36, was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison, The Telegraph reports, after stealing naked snaps of Scarlett Johansson and other celebrities and making them available online.
Johansson testified, via a video statement, saying that she felt “truly humiliated and embarrassed” by Chaney’s actions. The defendant reportedly said “I don’t know what else to say except I’m sorry. This will never happen again.” Well, it definitely won’t happen for the next decade, because Chaney will be locked up for the foreseeable future. There has been discussion over whether or not the sentencing was too harsh, though two women that Chaney knew, who were also targeted by his cruel actions, described the man as “calculated, cruel and creepy.” No doubt they’ll be glad to see him in the clink for a long time, especially after he sent naked pictures of one of the ladies to her own father.
Initially, Chaney was charged with 28 counts of hacking, or hacking related offences but he struck a deal with prosecutors. He eventually pled guilty to nine counts “including wiretapping and unauthorised access to protected computers” and was forced to pay $66,179 (£40,680) to his victims.
