Scarlett Johansson has become the latest Hollywood lady to take to the stage and is currently starring as Maggie the Cat in Tennessee Williams’ classic Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
The reviews have been mixed at best so far, with some critics praising Scar Jo’s performance and predicting success for the revival, whilst others are not so sure. This, of course, isn’t Johannson’s first time on Broadway. In fact, her 2010 debut in Arthur Miller’s View From The Bridge won the actress a Tony award and some recognition as a Broadway name. Whilst this new effort might not be as unanimous a hit with the critics, it seems to be doing all right with theatre going audiences – Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has sold over 9000 tickets in the four weeks of its revival! With some tickets selling at $90 a piece, that number is nothing to sneer at. Of course, the play will be facing some tough times. Now is definitely not a hot season for the Big White Way, and, as seen in 2012, often even the promise of a big Hollywood name isn’t enough to draw in the crowds. Katie Holmes’ Broadway endeavor, Dead Accounts, for example, had to close seven weeks ahead of schedule this January, due to poor sales. Hopefully this won’t be the case here.
