Parker initially felt that the role would tie her down for too many years in one place, according to a colleague.
Playing Carrie Bradshaw was the role that made her world famous, but Sarah Jessica Parker was apparently very reluctant to take on her ‘Sex And The City’ part initially.
In a column for Playbill magazine on Wednesday (August 26th), actor Seth Rudesky, who worked with the 50 year old actress and her husband Matthew Broderick at a Broadway event, revealed that Parker “completely wanted to get out of it” when she learned that ‘SATC’ had been picked up by HBO.
Sarah Jessica Parker apparently wasn't too keen on 'Sex And The City' initially
Rudesky writes: “She really didn't want to be tied down to one job because she loved going from gig to gig and being, what she called, a ‘journeyman’. She tried various ways to get out of it including telling HBO that she would film three projects for free if they'd release her from her contract!”
Luckily for the series, she eventually agreed to take on the part. “Basically, they convinced her to honor her deal, and she now has no regrets,” Rudesky concludes.
‘Sex and the City’ ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2004 on HBO, with Parker starring alongside Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall for 94 episodes. It garnered a huge fanbase, amassing seven Emmys and eight Golden Globes in that time. It spawned two movies in 2008 and 2010 which, although critically slammed, earned $153 million and $95.3 million respectively.
And, just to tease ‘SATC’ fans, Parker hasn’t ruled out returning once more to play Carrie in a third movie. However, she stated pretty comprehensively to Elle magazine that she would never agree to play a similar role in something else. “I don't love the idea of playing another woman who loves fashion and is slightly flawed in New York City.”
