The suicide of the best-loved actor and comedian Robin Williams was the most searched for term on Google in 2014. Internet users searched for news on the Mrs Doubtfire star more than for the football World Cup (second), the Ebola virus (third) and the missing Malaysia Airlines flight (fourth).

Williams died on the morning of August 11, 2014 at his home in Paradise Cay, California. The final autopsy report affirmed that Williams had committed suicide and that neither alcohol or drugs - both of which Williams struggled with during his career - played a role in his death.

Interestingly, Disney's Frozen was the only movie title to break into the most-searched top 10, though Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and David Fincher's Gone Girl ranked strongly. TV shows included True Detective, Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black.
The overall top ten was made up by the Flappy Birds game, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, terrorist group ISIS, the Ferguson shootings and the crisis in Ukraine.

The top trending movies also included Divergent, Lone Survivor, Godzilla, 22 Jump Street, Big Hero 6, Annabelle and Maleficent.
The Following, House of Cards, Gotham, South Park and American Horror Story made up the Top 10 of most searched-for TV movies, while The Lego Movie, Avengers 2, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 were among the most searched for movie trailers.

Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey and Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin were the Top 3 most searched for actors, while Jennifer Lawrence, Renee Zellweger and Betty White were the most searched actresses.
In music, it was Iggy Azalea was the biggest trending artist, closely followed by Lorde and Sam Smith. Meghan Trainor, Solange Knowles, Nicki Minaj, Weird Al, Sia, Daft Punk and Taylor Swift rounded out the Top 10.
