The cinema cash registers saw plenty of action this weekend, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 taking a massive $199.6 million from 9,950 locations across 54 markets. To put that into context: its predecessor Breaking Dawn Part 1 took $144 million from the same amount of cinemas, reports Reuters.
The fifth and final movie in the series - once again starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart - took $141 million in the U.S alone, $24.4 million in the UK and $19 million in Brazil. Basically, it took loads and loads of cash, just about everywhere. Its success in North America pushed Sam Mendes' huge grossing James Bond movie Skyfall into second place, though Daniel Craig's third outing as 007 has now taken over half a billion worldwide. It collected a further $49.6 million this weekend, confirming its status as the most successful Bond movie ever made. Elsewhere, Lincoln pulled in a solid $21 million for its first full weekend though Steven Spielberg's movie is perhaps the most critically acclaimed film in this week's Top 5. Animated family flick Wreck-It Ralph continued its good form to take $18.3 million, while Oscar bait Flight, starring Denzel Washington, took $8.6 million to sit comfortably in fifth position. Ben Affleck's Argo, Taken 2, Pitch Perfect, Here Comes the Boom and Cloud Atlas completed the Top 10.
Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 is likely to hold onto the top spot this coming weekend, though it faces reasonable competition in the form of Ang Lee's Life of Pi. Action-fest Red Dawn starring Chris Hemsworth will also tempt cinemagoers.
