Last night’s Grammy awards was jam-packed with superstar performances, from Lady Gaga to Adele, but there was one big name noticeably absent, Rihanna. Rihanna had been scheduled to perform new song ‘Kiss it Better’ at the ceremony, but she was forced to back out at the last minute due to an infection. But what makes it all the more disappointing is now talk show host James Corden has spilled on what we missed out on from Rihanna at Monday night's awards.

Speaking during 'The Late Late Show' after the Grammys Corden revealed: “A couple of weeks ago, I got asked if I would introduce Rihanna on the show. I get this phone call saying Rihanna has got this big thing planned for her song 'Kiss It Better' and she's doing like a whole '80s talk show thing and it's going to be really cool.”

“What she wants you to do is be like an '80s talk show host and I'd have funny glasses and sit on a thing, maybe have a cigarette, and I'd introduce Rihanna, and she'd come out and do a song and then at the end she'd come and sit with me, like it was it's own talk show which they called As It Lays. So, I go on Saturday morning and I rehearse it there. She's a bit under the weather but it's all going to be OK.”

Corden said that on Monday morning he was all ready to go and had even been measured for an 80s style suit. When he arrived at the awards he then boasted on the red carpet about his special gig with Rihanna, completely unaware that the segment had been cancelled.

“I get to the end of the red carpet and they say, 'Rihanna's had to pull out of the show. She's pulled out. She's been told by a doctor she's not allowed to sing. It could really damage her voice,’” Corden explained.

Corden then joked that he had offered to do the number himself, saying that he’d even ‘sent someone out to get loads of umbrellas’ for the performance. Sadly the talk show host was told the segment had just been cancelled and his services weren't needed anymore. But Corden did get to take the Grammys’ stage after all, when LL Cool J kindly let him help introduce the Lionel Ritchie tribute.

"This is what a cool guy LL Cool J is,” Corden said. “He goes, James, don't worry. Come on with me and introduce John Legend and all these other big stars for a Lionel Richie tribute.’" Still, we can’t help but feel that we missed out on something really special from the unlikely pairing of Rihanna and Corden.
