So it's Christmas Day, and you've eaten your own body weight in turkey. What better way to end the best day of the year than catching Quentin Tarantino's gruesome flick? Django Unchained's sort-of-Western is playing in theaters right this minute, so what the hell are you waiting for?
The film - which briefly held a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes - has received unanimously positive reviews. The Los Angeles Times said, "In "Django," Tarantino is a man unchained, creating his most articulate, intriguing, provoking, appalling, hilarious, exhilarating, scathing and downright entertaining film yet." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone echoed the praise, saying, "Tarantino lives to cross the line. Is Django Unchained too much? .It wouldn't be Tarantino otherwise."
However, not everyone is won over by the film, including filmmaker Spike Lee, who hasn't seen it, and will not see it anytime soon. Speaking to Vibe Magazine, Lee said, "I can't speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it. I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. That's just me... I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else." Much of the directors anger is directed squarely at the film's subject matter - slavery. "American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them," he later added on Twitter. When one fan suggested the film was not to be taken too seriously, Lee responded, "Wrong.Birth Of A Nation Got Black Folks Lynced [sic]. Media Is Powerful. DON'T SLEEP. WAKE UP YO."
Other criticisms of the movie have focused on the use of the N-word, though one thing's for sure, Django Unchained is going to be a serious contender at the Golden Globes and Oscars in 2013.
