The Academy remembers stars who passed away including Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Walker.
The Academy Awards paid tribute to actor Philip Seymour Hoffman last night, who was among the stars featured in the awards ‘In Memorium’ sequence last night.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was among those hounered last night
The 48 year old actor passed away last month after a drug overdose at his home in New York. Actress Cate Blanchett was noticeably emotional by the tribute paid to her late friend, the actor was honoured in the clip which was followed by a performance of ‘Wind Beneath my Wings’ by Bette Midler.
Also remembered was ‘Sopranos’ star James Gandolfini, who died of a heart attack in June last year while in Italy with his teenage son. ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ star Peter O’Toole, who died in December last year was also included as was former child actress Shirley Temple who passed away last month aged 81.
British actor Richard Griffiths, best known as Uncle Vernon to Harry Potter fans, was remembered in the segment. He died in March of last year following complications from heart surgery. Tribute was also paid to Joan Fontaine, star of Hitchcock films including ‘Suspicion’. The 96 year old actress died in December.
Paul Walker, star of ‘The Fast and the Furious’, who died tragically in a car accident at the end of last year, was also one of the stars remembered by the Academy. ‘Ghostbusters’ actor Harold Ramis who was also known for his writing and directing was featured after he passed away last week.
Notably absent, however, was ‘Glee’ star Corey Montieth. However, the Academy has previously not included stars best known for their television work, in 2010 they chose not to include ‘Charlie’s Angels’ star Farrah Fawcett who had died the previous year. Another TV star who was missed out was James Avory, best remembered as Uncle Phil on ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’.
Another name left off the video was Sarah Jones, the camera assistant who passed away in a train accident on February. A campaign had been running to have her included and whilst she wasn't seen on the video she was mentioned in a banner at the end of Midler’s performance. Many nominees also wore black ribbons on the night to pay tribute to the 23 year old.

The ‘In Memorium’ video was introduced by actress Glenn Close, who said, ‘we love you, we honour you, we miss you, but most of all - we thank you.’ An extended list is also now on the Oscar’s website.
