Sue Akers, the deputy assistant police commissioner who has headed the telephone hacking investigation in the U.K., told the Leveson committee, which is probing the matter, that Scotland Yard has notified 2,615 people that they may have been targets of the hackers. She said that of these there are 702 whose phones were likely hacked. Akers revealed that some of the reports that appeared in Rupert Murdoch's newspapers apparently came from stolen mobile phones. However, the hacking produced little that was "of genuine public interest." She also disclosed that police had determined that one prison officer had received £35,000 (about $53,000) from three news organizations, including Rupert Murdoch's News International, Trinity Mirror and Express Newspapers between April 2010 and June 2011.
