The furry star of 'The Artist' and 'Water for Elephants' has been put to sleep aged 13.
Uggie, the Hollywood dog from 'The Artist', has died.
The furry star was 13 and suffering from a prostate tumour when he was put to sleep on Friday (07.08.15) in Los Angeles.
Uggie rose to prominence in the Oscar winning silent film as the scene-stealing pet of main character George Valentine, who was played by Jean Dujardin, but also received praise for his role in the period drama 'Water for Elephants' and a number of commercials and helped to raise the profile of acting dogs in Hollywood.
The Jack Russell terrier was owned by Omar Von Muller who rescued Uggie from being sent to the dog pound.
He said it was a ''difficult'' decision to have him put down.
Announcing the dog's retirement in 2012 after the Oscars, Omar admitted the little terrier had an impressive natural talent.
He said: ''Everybody thinks I am a great trainer.
''I don't think so. I think he is just a great dog.''
Uggie wasn't eligible to win an Oscar but did receive the Palm Dog gong at Cannes in 2011.
In 2012 he went on to have his memoir 'Uggie, My Story' published in the United States, UK and France.
A second trainer, Sarah Clifford, described Uggie as ''a perfect little terrier'' and added: ''I will forever hold him dearly in my heart and never forget his infinite love for chicken and hotdogs.''
