In its final season on the BBC and having failed to ignite over the years, ‘The Voice UK’ looks like it’s coming to an ignominious end, scoring its lowest-ever viewing figures for a single episode on Saturday night.

The BBC’s flagship reality singing competition floundered badly in the ratings this weekend (March 26th), dipping below five million viewers for only the second time in its history (the other being an episode moved to a Friday night in 2013).

The Easter weekend might be one of the factors for the lower-than-normal figures, as well as the England international football friendly on ITV at the same time as millions tuned in to see the Three Lions defeat Germany 3-2.

Coaches Boy George and will.i.am each lost an artist in the vote, with another four contestants due to be eliminated next weekend ahead of the final on April 9th.

Only 4.75 million saw the first live performances episode this weekend, in which it was revealed that contestants Beth Morris and Chloe Castro had pulled out just hours before broadcast, and a further 300,000 viewers tuned out before the results were announced.

Morris, from Paloma Faith’s team and hotly tipped to win ‘The Voice’ altogether, was booted off the show just before it aired after she admitted to taking cocaine during the rehearsals period. The BBC had originally stated that she had departed of her own accord due to “personal reasons”.

Having previously been addicted to the drug and attended rehab to conquer it, Morris confessed that she had used it to alleviate the stress of appearing on the show.

Chloe Castro, who was on Ricky Wilson’s team, retired from the competition for “health reasons”. “I have had a fantastic time and wish all the other contestants all the best in the competition.”
