The team behind the The LEGO Movie sequel are dusting themselves down after the disappointment of the Oscars snub and has hired Community and The Mindy Project director Rob Schrab to get behind the camera for the forthcoming movie.

Schrab will be directing the movie from a script from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote and directed the critically acclaimed first movie.

"We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years," Lord and Miller said in a joint statement. "People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, 'Of course!'"

It's Schrab's first feature film in the director's chair though he wrote the animated film Monster House and has also worked on The Sarah Silverman Program. 

Warner Bros has big plans for the LEGO franchise and as well as the sequel will release a Ninjango movie in September 2016 and Batman LEGO feature in May 2017. The sequel is pencilled in for a 2018 release.

Though The LEGO Movie was snubbed in the category of Best Animated Feature, it's theme Everything is Awesome got a best original song nomination. A live performance at the ceremony was performed by Tegan and Sara, The Lonely Island, Questlove and Mark Mothersbaugh performed the track. 

"Sweet, funny, preposterously complex and uniquely ridiculous, The Lego Movie feels like a quantum step up for both CG animation and movies based on marketing pitches," said Norman Wilner of NOW Toronto.

The LEGO Movie took $486 million worldwide on a budget of just $60 million.
