For Christians in search of a moving tale, Dallas Jenkins’ show is the one.
When it comes to entertainment, in the secular society we live in most people don’t immediately think of Biblical tales as being desirable content, despite the Bible being one of the most remarkable books ever written. And while there have been TV shows and movies written about Jesus for decades, there’s nothing quite like Dallas Jenkins’ The Chosen.
The award-winning showrunner (whose previous directorial ventures include The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, What If… and Midnight Clear) recently wrapped the second season of his unique Christian TV drama, starring Jonathan Roumie (Life Hack, Saving Lincoln) as Jesus.
It’s the first ever multi-season series about the life of Jesus of Nazareth and became one of the most crowd-funded projects of all time following the airing of the pilot in 2017. Season one and two aired on Angel Studios, Inc.’s streaming service, VidAngel as well as its own app on Google Play, and better still it has been made available to watch for free thanks to the kindness of strangers. Viewers are encouraged to “pay it forward” so that others don’t have to let poverty prevent them from viewing this incredible story.
Dallas Jenkins revealed that the thing that makes this Bible TV show different from all the others is that it “explores Jesus through the eyes of those around Him”.
“We explored the backstories of Simon Peter, Matthew, Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus, and a few of Jesus’ miracle recipients, and in turn experienced Him in the way they did,”he explained. “We couldn’t help but identify with their recklessness, rough pasts, religious piety, and desperation for life change. And ultimately, their redemption.”
The first season introduced Jesus and the people that would soon become his disciples; their struggles and the demons they face; while the second season explores His teachings and his followers’ redemption.
