Sir John Hurt has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The 75-year-old actor - who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Joseph Merrick in the 1980 biographical film 'The Elephant Man' - has revealed he is currently undergoing treatment for the disease, but is optimistic of making a full recovery.

In a statement, Hurt said: ''I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life and in that spirit I would like to make a statement.

''I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.

''I am continuing to focus on my professional commitments and will shortly be recording Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell (one of life's small ironies!) for BBC Radio 4.''

The actor's incredible career has spanned six decades and has included starring roles in the Ridley Scott-directed movie 'Alien', political thriller 'V for Vendetta' and the espionage movie 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'.

He was seen last year with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in 'Hercules', while he also appeared in TV series 'Doctor Who' as The War Doctor in the show's 50th anniversary special 'The Day of the Doctor', which aired in November 2013.

Hurt was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year for his services to drama.
