Nadine Dorries’ decision to abandon her duties as a Tory MP to be a contestant on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here has been met with widespread condemnation.
Fellow MPs are in disbelief over Dorries’ decision to join the show in Australia for up to a month, meaning that she would miss out on an important EU budget vote and could possibly miss George Osborne’s UK mini-budget.
In justification, Dorries reportedly told The Sun “I'm doing the show because 16 million people watch it. If people are watching I'm A Celebrity..., that is where MPs should be going. I'm not going in there to upset people, but I have opinions.” Her colleagues in Westminster and political allies, however have not shared her opinions. The former Conservative MP Harry Greenway said “Whatever fee she receives should go to charity, because her parliamentary pay won't stop during her absence.” And let’s not forget, Dorries is on a substantial salary of over £65,000 per year. Her absence would mean that her Mid-Bedfordshire constituency would be without an MP whilst she was away.
The show’s producers have not confirmed whether she will be on the show or not. The Independent have suggested that other contestants expected to be announced for this year’s show include Linda Robson, Eric Bristow and Helen Flanagan.
