While we freeze our butts off here in the Northern Hemisphere, Selena and friends are wreaking havoc in Dubai.
Ok, so let’s talk about cultural traditions and Selena Gomez, shall we? I don’t want to, you don’t want to, but we can all get through this together and there’ll be a prize at the end. Cool? Cool.
Selena doesn't always show her ankles, but when she does, it causes international scandal.
So Selena celebrated New Year’s in Abu Dhabi and decided to hit up a mosque in the process, as you do. Except she did it in the touristy way, rather than the cultural appreciation way, and now she’s taking some heat for an Instagram photo. In the shot, which has since been taken down, but lives on via countless screenshots, Selena can be seen flashing her ankle inside Abu Dhabi's Grand Mosque.

Now, the ethical considerations of banning women from showing their ankles aside, shouldn’t someone have informed Selena of something so blatantly obvious ahead of her visit? Or at least before she posted the shot? This reeks of manufactured PR faux pas. But the picture and accompanying comments have all been wiped now, so I’m just tossing around ideas here.
A second picture, showing Gomez and fellow Young Hollywood card carriers Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Cody Simpson and Shay Mitchell smiling and striking poses has also been lambasted but remained on her Instagram Thursday. So... that’s one way to welcome the New Year and keep your name in the headlines at the same time – cultural sensitivity who?
Ok. That’s it. We all got through it. Now sit back and enjoy possibly the best thing on the internet.
