The couple abandoned their US nuptials in protest.
It's been more than a month since Russell Wilson and Ciara's gorgeous wedding ceremony at an English castle. As it turns out, they hadn't always meant to marry overseas; they originally planned to wed in North Carolina, but ended up cancelling their nuptials due to their disagreement with the state's bathroom bill.
Russell Wilson and Ciara wed in Cheshire in the end
The 'Love Sex Magic' singer and the NFL player got engaged in Seychelles earlier this year, but they re-scheduled their wedding day twice before finally settling on a destination ceremony in Cheshire, England. They enlisted celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss (who helped with La La Anthony and Melo Carmelo Anthony's wedding) to help create their special day, and who recently revealed to The Knot News that it was third time lucky when it came to organising everything.
'I did the whole thing - three times', Weiss said. 'They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws.' Plus, their second choice was in Paris, but it became logistically impossible due to Couture Fashion Week.
The law which put the couple off was the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, also called House Bill 2 or HB2, which dictates that people are only allowed to use rest rooms and locker rooms specified for the gender that they were assigned at birth. This has been largely criticized for its unnecessary discrimination against transgender people, and many celebrities have spoken publicly about their antipathy towards it including Caitlyn Jenner, Bruce Springsteen, Demi Lovato, Ringo Starr and Cyndi Lauper. Many musicians have boycotted the state in protest of the bill, while others have used their concerts in North Carolina as a platform to speak out about trans rights.
